The papers of Sir James Graham, Home Secretary, statesman and reformer, document forty years of British political and social history. As a reformer, Graham's career was dominated by such issues as the Poor Law, the Factory Acts and the reform of elementary education. He served on the committees which preceded both the First Reform Bill and the Repeal of the Corn Laws, and he was deeply concerned for the demands of the Chartists and the plight of the Irish immigrants in the aftermath of the great potato famine.
